Three University of Maryland Department of Aerospace Engineering faculty were recognized for their outstanding contributions during the annual American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) National Capital Section (NCS) Honors and Awards Banquet held May 21, 2019 in Arlington, Va.
Daanish Maqbool received the Hal Andrews Young Engineer/Scientist of the Year award.
Maqbool is a lecturer and researcher at UMD and the CEO of North American Wave Engine Corporation (NAWEC), a start-up company engaged in the design and development of wave engines for jet propulsion applications. NAWEC has designed and developed a jet engine without any moving parts, to deliver unparalleled levels of fuel-efficiency and weight- and cost-savings to a rapidly growing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market and the broader aerospace sector.

The Hal Andrew Award recognizes a local AIAA member who is early in their career and has had a single significant professional accomplishment or longer-term outstanding career leadership/accomplishment in the technical disciplines of aeronautics and astronautics.
Anthony Pucciarella received the Engineer of the Year Award.
Pucciarella serves as the director of operations for the UMD Unmanned Aircraft Test Site, and was a member of the UAS Transport Team that recently took part in a successful first flight of an unmanned aircraft delivering a donor kidney to surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) in Baltimore for successful transplantation into a patient with kidney failure.

The Engineer of the Year Award is presented to a local AIAA member who has made a recent individual contribution to the application of scientific and mathematical principles leading to a significant accomplishment or event worthy of AIAA's national or international recognition.
Darryll J. Pines received the Piers Sellers Inaugural Award.
Pines, dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering and Nariman Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering, was recognized for his work as principal investigator on a National Science Foundation funded pilot program, entitled Engineering For US All (E4USA), a first-of-its-kind nationwide pre-college course on engineering principles and design.
